Ferdinand Penker

Ferdinand Penker (* 1950 in Klagenfurt , † 2014 in Farrach ) was an Austrian painter.

life and work

Ferdinand Penker first studied medicine and art history in Graz. From 1977 to 1987 he taught as a professor at the University of California at Davis . With his work he repeatedly posed questions about contemporary art , especially questions about structure and order, form and space, as well as line and color. His way of working was characterized by work blocks within which he created individual, progressive series that differed only slightly. In the 1990s, he expanded this way of working, which tended to be minimalist, monochrome and radically decelerated painting, into space. His work is generally influenced by constructive and concrete ideas as well as AmericanColor field painting and assigned to Minimal Art . Both the canvases and the works on paper by Ferdinand Penker address the painting itself, the process of creation and the different possibilities of perception.
