Fernando Centeno Güell

Fernando Centeno Güell (born December 2, 1907 in San José , Costa Rica , † September 15, 1993 ) was a writer and co-founder of special needs education in Costa Rica.

Live and act

After completing his first training in his hometown, he attended the Complutense University of Madrid , where he studied special education. He was awarded a United States scholarship to study special teaching methods for the blind, deaf, and mute . In 1940 Güell founded a special education center in his hometown, which was later named Centro Nacional de Educación Especial Fernando Centeno Güell in his honor .

From 1962 to 1963 he was professor and director of the first special education faculty for teacher training at the Universidad de Costa Rica . Afterwards he took over the coordination of the department for rehabilitative therapy at the national hospital for the mentally ill for 12 years.

In 1926 Güell published his first volume of poetry influenced by symbolism under the title Lirios y cardos ( Eng . Lilies and thistles ). La mendiga del pinar ( Eng . The beggar of the pines ) followed a year later . He published a total of 18 books.
