Fieldday in Lüneburg, 2002

Fieldday ( field day ) is in its original name a multi-day competition among radio amateurs . Today, field day is also a short term for meetings of radio amateurs, at which one or more amateur radio stations are set up on open ground, i.e. independent of the power grid and other infrastructure.

In the field days as a competition, all participating amateur radio stations must be set up in an open area independently of the conventional power grid. Some competitions require a minimum distance of 100 m to the nearest socket or power line. With this amateur radio station, the radio amateurs then try to make as many radio connections as possible within a given time frame .

In practice, the field days often represent a mixture of radio competition and camping . Field days were originally annual disaster control and emergency radio exercises , during which worldwide radio communication was practiced under the most difficult conditions.

At Jugendfielddays, young radio amateurs meet for a tent camp with amateur radio operations. In addition to the antenna construction, mostly in connection with amateur radio direction finders (ARDF), other activities such as electronic handicrafts , geocaching or the guitar evening by the campfire are on the program.
