Fillomino ( Japanese フ ィ ル オ ミ ノ ) is a puzzle published by the Japanese magazine Nikoli .

Fillomino is played on a rectangular grid of any size, the lines of which are often drawn in with dots. Some squares are marked with numbers.

The aim of the game is to fill the rectangle with connected building blocks ( polyominos ). The size of these building blocks is determined by the numbers; each number is in a building block that contains exactly as many squares as this number indicates.

Two blocks of the same size must not have a common limit.

Unlike other Japanese number puzzles, there is no one-to-one relationship between the building blocks and the given numbers. A block can contain several identical numbers and there can be blocks in the gaps that have no number at all. For these gaps, it is then also necessary to find out what polyominos really fit into. In the example on the right, for example, a two had to be inserted.

Usually the solution is clearly determined by the given numbers.

To solve a Fillomino, you typically first try to determine the associated areas for individual numbers, which can then be gradually added to the correct solution.

Since fillominos are often only solved with a pencil, it is often better not to define the building blocks with colors or other markings, but rather by adding more numbers so that each number is in a range of just as many numbers.

There is always a one in a block that only consists of this number. Since two blocks of the same size must not be adjacent, there cannot be another one in their vicinity.

It is often helpful to compare the total number of fields in a Fillomino with the sum of the given numbers, as this gives you an overview of how many numbers must be in common areas.
