Facade relief at the Arman film theater (2018)

The Arman Movie Theater is a cinema in Almaty , Kazakhstan . The cinema building is an important building of socialist modernism in Kazakhstan. It was built in 1968 based on designs by the architects A. Korschempo and I. Slonow. It has large reliefs on the west, north and east facades. The relief on the east side bears the title Science , the one on the west facade October . They were designed by the artists Viktor Konstantinow and G. Sawisionny.

The building combines elements of a strict modernity with traditional Kazakh ornaments and thus stands at a turning point in Kazakh architecture from a strict international modern to a more ornamented late modern.

The condition of the building has been deteriorating since the 1990s. Extensive renovation plans have not yet been implemented, instead disruptive interventions such as the installation of doors in the middle of the facade reliefs have taken place.
