First People of Kalahari

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

First People of the Kalahari (FPK) was a Botswana organization.

It was founded in 1991 to fight for the human and especially the land rights of the Gana, Gwi and Bakgalagadi.

Roy Sesana is one of the leaders of these people, who are among the last of the San who lived almost self-sufficiently on and off their own land until they were forcibly displaced from 1997 - after years of distress. There is strong evidence that these evictions took place as diamond deposits are found beneath their land.

Despite great difficulties, the FPK sued the government to fight for their land rights. This process could set a precedent for the struggle of indigenous peoples around the world. The FPK has also mapped their traditional areas in order to be registered as official residents of their ancestral lands.

In 2013 the organization was dissolved.
