The Mitteltal flax roasting plant was a subsidiary of Kolb & Schüle AG for flax fiber production .

history

The flax roasting plant in Mitteltal , municipality of Baiersbronn , was built in 1922 by Kolb & Schüle AG in Ellbachtal. The reasons for this were the lime-poor, soft Black Forest water, the availability of meadow areas and workers and the courtesy of the community when purchasing the property (17,100 m², of which 2,100 m² were built over) and when purchasing the timber.

The flax roasting plant started operations in 1923. Lawn roasting was used as the roasting process in autumn and water roasting in spring. The further processing of the flat straw, the drying, breaking, swinging and panting was done by machine in the building on Ellbachstrasse. A prime mover heated with the flax waste provided the driving force for the machines.

The flax roasting plant produced around 5000 kg of spinnable flax fibers a day, sometimes in shifts with 60 to 90 employees.

Lower prices for swing flax from abroad meant that domestic flax processing became uneconomical. As a result, operations in Mitteltal also ceased, the buildings and facilities were sold.

The former operations manager of the flax roasting plant Richard Mayer then set up a chip basket factory in the buildings.
