foodsharing.de is an internet platform for distributing surplus food in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It is supported by the association foodsharing e. V. and started on December 12, 2012.

Foodsharing.de is now used by 200,000 private individuals to share and collect food that would otherwise be disposed of (“foodsharer”). In addition, more than 40,000 voluntary food savers organize themselves via the platform: They collect food from retailers and producers and distribute them. foodsharing.de has 566 open shelves and refrigerators, so-called “fair dividers”, where food can be shared. (As of May 1, 2018)

The website is a main project of foodsharing e. V. in the engagement against food waste. The association wants to raise awareness of this problem through the website. Despite the high number of members, foodsharing e. V. almost exclusively voluntary, the website can also be used free of charge.

history

The original idea for a platform against food waste came about in summer 2011 during the preparations for the movie Taste the Waste between director Valentin Thurn and the head of the social media campaign for the film, Sebastian Engbrocks. Independently of this, the design students Thomas Gerling and Christian Zehnter as well as the television journalist Ines Rainer developed a similar idea in early 2012. The joint project emerged from the cooperation of these actors. The necessary start-up capital was collected from April to July 2012 as part of a crowdfunding campaign at Startnext . The amount of funding targeted was € 10,000, and at the end of the campaign a total of € 11,594 was raised from 394 supporters.

On November 16, 2012, the platform entered the beta phase , to be fully activated on December 12, 2012. The platform was also launched in Austria in May 2013, initially under the address myfoodsharing.at, and has since been merged with the German platform. By February 2014, the German platform had almost 35,000 active users.

In the summer of 2013, Raphael Fellmer, who was living on a money strike at the time, and the social computer scientist Raphael Wintrich expanded the concept in order to also be able to work with companies. Raphael Fellmer started the voluntary initiative of the “food rescuers” in Berlin and Raphael Wintrich volunteered to program a completely new version of the platform to make a suitable tool for “saving food” available to all users.

On July 10, 2013, foodsharing.de received the Greentec Award in the communication category.

foodsharing.de received the 2015 IQ Prize , donated by Mensa in Germany , for “Using intelligence for the common good”.

In the meantime, the term food sharing has established itself internationally as part of a so-called sharing economy .

concept

At foodsharing.de, food is passed on from private to private and commercial food is picked up in order to pass it on to foodsharing.de storage locations. In the private sector, work is mainly carried out using so-called food baskets (food sharing), which is open to everyone without training. For commercial pickups (food saving), it is necessary to complete a quiz and three introductory pickups with more experienced food savers. Since most supermarkets are organized in retail chains and therefore often follow uniform guidelines for all branches, the platform comes into direct contact with the responsible management level. This results in cross-regional collaborations, such as with the Bio Company . In addition, there are many local collaborations with individual supermarkets or bakeries. These are usually initiated locally by members of the community. A separate team is formed for each company to ensure regular collections and is managed by two to four managers. In order to network within each city, ambassadors are elected for each district and regular plenaries take place. Meetings are also organized nationwide.

At foodsharing.de, foods are also used after their best before date , as long as they can still be consumed without hesitation. The food savers sign a legal agreement in this regard, which releases the companies from liability for the further use of the food and obliges the food rescuers to pass it on free of charge.
