The Fort National is a fortress on a tidal island in front of Saint-Malo .

The rocks on the island on which Fort National is located were used as a landmark for ships in the Middle Ages. In 1689, the French King Louis XIV decided to build a fortress on the rock to protect the city from the attack of the English. Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban worked out the plans and Simeon Garangeau carried them out. The fortress was given different names: during the Revolution 'Fort Républicain', under Napoleon I 'Fort Impérial', during the Restoration 'Fort Royal', from 1852 to 1870 again 'Fort Impérial' and from 1870 'Fort National'. The fortress has been a historical monument since 1906.
