Free of chains

Free of chains is a historical story by Käthe Papke from the 13th century about the mighty Counts of Katzenelnbogen .

backgrounds

In her exciting novel, Papke describes the story of the Katzenelnbogen at the time of the transition of the crown from Rudolf I of Habsburg to Adolf von Nassau (1292). It is a story of political intrigue, the struggle for worldly and spiritual power, and forbidden love. The notes of Father Gerhard von Katzenellenbogen, which can be read like a diary, show how his resentment at his forced monk life turns into deep spirituality. Whether Gerhard and his brother, who were both put in the monastery, will remain monks is the question that runs like a red thread through the book. But Papke also shows how rulers were made by whom for what purposes. The story is based on the "Chronicle of those von Katzenelbogen" and the "Regesta of the Archbishops of Mainz" and is supposed to have actually happened.
