A carte blanche , also known as a letter of freedom , is a mostly royal or princely document that granted certain privileges in the Middle Ages . Thus, the dismissal could, for example, from the servitude granted by a charter or it was the right of privateering as a privateer awarded. Also known is the golden license to the Transylvanian Saxons or the Tyrolean freedom letter .

Other freedoms such as the right to coin , free trade or certain special rights are also referred to as freedoms or privileges.

Conversely, a carte blanche can mean an advertisement as outlawed .
