The Freiligrath monument is located on the footpath in the Remagen district of Rolandswerth at the level of the island of Nonnenwerth , which leads from the federal road 9 to the Rolandsbogen .

The inauguration of the monument took place on June 17, 1914 on the 104th birthday of Ferdinand Freiligrath , just under two months before the outbreak of the First World War .

The step-shaped monument complex made of basalt lava and Franconian shell limestone has a simple, approximately one meter high plinth on its terrace-like center with a larger than life-size bronze bust facing the Rolandsbogen, by the London sculptor Siegfried M. Wiens , a nephew of Freiligrath. The monument was erected in honor of Freiligrath and out of gratitude for him, because he took the initiative for the rebuilding of the legendary Roland's Arch, which collapsed on the night of December 28th to 29th, 1839 through an appeal for donations in the " Kölnische Zeitung ". The Freiligrath monument was also built on the basis of a private initiative. Here, too, the funds came together through donations.

The facility was restored in 2001, followed by a further renovation in 2010.
