Garath leisure center
The Garath leisure center at Fritz-Erler-Strasse 21 in Düsseldorf-Garath was built from 1972 to 1974 according to plans by the architect Olaf Jacobsen. Partners were BG Székessy, employees Liesel Drepper and Lutz Rehbein. It was opened on April 25, 1975. Today it serves as a cultural and community center in the Garath district of Düsseldorf.
In 2009, the accessibility for the handicapped was realized according to the plans of modus.architekten. In connection with this, the district library was expanded.
description
The building complex consists of eleven concrete cubes of the same size; the outer walls are made of masonry. Their levels are offset from one another over two floors. The ground plan is helical. The eleven cubes are grouped around an inner courtyard. This has the shape of four assembled rectangles of different sizes. The seating steps in the inner courtyard are arranged around a playground similar to an arena . A grandstand in the inner courtyard allows a view of the playground.
use
The usable area is 3200 m². The complex contains youth rooms, old people's club, adult education center, the Garath district library with 25,000 media, a health department, the Zentrum plus network and the Café Hermann . Twelve rooms and a large pottery are available. The large hall is regularly used for cinema screenings, as a small stage and for all kinds of events. The center of the house is the event hall with 350 seats with row seating and a built-up grandstand
"The culture and community center" Freizeitstätte Garath "has been an integral part of the district and cultural work in the south of Düsseldorf since 1975 [...] Over 60 offers from various actors take place weekly in the culture and community center."
