history

In the swampy wasteland on the Lützbach between the towns of Auel and Oberpleis, construction of the original lido on the Lützbach began in 1935 on the land of the farmer Klasen. On July 27, 1935, the lido was opened after a year of construction. The bathroom consisted of a 33 meter long concrete basin, a sand hall and a toilet facility. The water came from a canal that was derived from the Lützbach. This canal also powered a mill. A bridge connected the stream and the lawn. At the end of the Second World War, the basin was damaged by grenades and later poorly repaired by US soldiers. However, the pool was only allowed to be used by American forces.

Restoration and reopening

In 1949, the residents of Oberpleis were able to repair their outdoor pool themselves, partly from donations and partly from community funds. For the donations, 50 pfennig badges were sold, depicting a bathing person in front of the Oberpleis church. With the restoration, the bathroom was expanded to include changing rooms and a lawn. It was re-inaugurated on July 30, 1950. The trained butcher Paul Bellinghausen, who celebrated his 50th anniversary as a swimming master in 2001, became the pool attendant.

Construction of the Oberpleis lido in 1954

In 1954, the Oberpleis outdoor pool was rebuilt and expanded from a 33-meter to a 50-meter pool. In addition, a three- and one-meter diving board, a children's pool and a supervisory tower were built. A cafeteria with sales rooms was added. Ten years later the bathroom was also technically renewed.

Further development into a wellness park

In 1974 the cousins Hans and Wilfried Rösgen from Beuel built a tennis hall with three playing fields and an attached restaurant on the premises. However, the city of Königswinter no longer wanted to pass the bath on, so it was transferred to the Rösgens in 1982. The Oberpleis outdoor pool was the first public outdoor pool in Germany to be privately operated.

In 1984 the newly built Siebengebirge leisure center was opened. In addition to the outdoor pool and the tennis hall, there were saunas, solariums, cosmetics, massage, a large outdoor garden area and a new restaurant in the sauna area. A wellness facility was created on an area of 20,000 square meters, taking medical aspects into account and taking into account the nature of the area. In 2008 the sauna park received an award from the German Sauna Association. According to the operator, the pool was visited by around 16,000 guests in 2008.
