Feed fence

Feed fence and feeding table

Feed barriers are catching and feeding place devices in the livestock . They are mainly used in cattle stalls .

The feed fences consist of solid steel frames that are installed in loose stalls . Here they form a partition between the cattle walking area and the feeding table where the feed is deposited. By sticking their heads through the bars, the cattle get to the feed.

Many grids are also equipped with a latch that allows livestock to be caught there. These are then also called self-locking grids. This fixation makes it possible to deal with the animal more calmly, since it does not have to be caught in the barn and thus suffers less stress. The restraint is used when the cattle needs to be treated, for example in the case of artificial insemination or illness.

Another variant of the feed fence is the neck rail. Here the partition consists only of a tube that is attached to the cattle's neck. This has the advantage that the cattle's eating behavior is more natural, as they can move around freely and therefore like to stand and eat at the feeding table. The disadvantage here is that the cattle cannot be fixed in the feed fence and that the animal can push lower-ranking animals away from the feed more easily.
