At the XVIII. 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo was a competition in football played.

The venues were Tokyo with the Olympic Stadium , the Chichibu Stadium , the Komazawa Stadium and Ōmiya with the Ōmiya Stadium as well as the Nishikyōgoku Athletic Stadium in Kyoto, the Nagai Stadium in Osaka and the Mitsuzawa Stadium in Yokohama.

As four years before , a group stage was played first, but this time the two group winners qualified for the quarter-finals. For the losers of the quarter-finals there was a round of hope for fifth place, but it was only played in these games.

Germany took part for the last time as the all-German Olympic team. In an intra-German qualification, the GDR selection had prevailed against the West German amateur selection , so it was the part that represented the all-German team. The group stage was overcome without any problems (two clear wins against Iran and Mexico and a 1-1 draw against Romania). In the quarter-finals you could defeat the Olympic champion of 1960 with Yugoslavia, but had to bow in the semi-finals of Czechoslovakia. In the game for third place, the GDR team had the upper hand against the United Arab Republic, which was the first time a German selection was able to win an Olympic medal in football.

In the final, Czechoslovakia lost 2-1 to Hungary , which was able to win the gold medal for the second time since 1952.

qualification

On May 24, 1964, during the qualifying match between Peru and Argentina , a mass panic broke out, with almost 350 deaths and over 500 injuries, which is the greatest tragedy in football history to this day.
