The Fuerza Pública de la República de Panamá (German about Panama's Public Security Forces ) are the national security forces of Panama . After Costa Rica, Panama is the second country in Latin America that no longer maintains a standing army, but operates with paramilitary units . The director is Julio Molto (as of 2013).
history
Panama's first armed forces were formed in 1903 when a Colombian brigadier general defected to the Panamanian independence fighters. His brigade became the "Panamanian Army".
In 1904, Panama's armed forces tried, unsuccessfully, to coup the government. The United States saw the domestic security of Panama and the Panama Canal endangered and abolished the army. For 48 years only the National Police existed as an armed force. In the 1930s, some recruits were trained at military academies in other Latin American countries, and the police took on a more military character.
Panama abolished its military in 1990. This was confirmed in 1994 by a unanimous parliamentary vote for a constitutional amendment . Some police units are limited in their ability to wage war .
structure
The National Police consists of over 10 departments. The Unidad Preventiva Comunitaria de la Policía Nacional unit is responsible for crime prevention in the Panamanian municipalities.
