Fundamental category

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fundamental category is a term used in connection with the indexing and cataloging of documents.

Similar to classes (from the classification of documents), fundamental categories are “fundamental” classes or terms, ie terms that break down a generic term into the most fundamental / fundamental components. In the DIN 31623 "indexing for content indexing of documents" Index states: "A fundamental category is the result of dividing universal terms in general parts, which is applicable in principle to all conceptual fields. Such fundamental categories are for example: "

  • Material (fabric)
  • property
  • process
  • contraption
  • Creature

"It is recommended to compile the fundamental categories that are relevant for a certain subject area and to consider them when indexing."
