Género chico

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Spanish literary studies, Género chico is a collective term for one-act play , popular swashbuckles with or without music, which have animated the Spanish and, above all, the Madrid theater since 1870, including Sainetes in particular . The Género chico was created as a reaction against the Zarzuela grande , the Zarzuela in three acts and against the foreign operetta , which critics also see as an expression of an at least partially xenophobic attitude.

Ricardo de la Vega (1839–1910), Tomás Luceño (1844–1931), Carlos Arniches (1866–1943) and the Serafín brothers (1871–1938) and Joaquín Álvarez Quintero (1873–1944) are considered masters .
