Gérard de Vivre

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gérard de Vivre (* in the 16th century in Ghent ; † before 1597) was a grammarian and foreign language teacher of French in Cologne.

Life

Vivre fled from the Flemish riots to Cologne , where he settled down as a French teacher (primarily for merchants) from 1563.

He wrote “the first ever French grammar intended for Germans, written in German and printed in Germany” (Greive) and dedicated it to a student, “Arnold von Segen”, son or grandson of councilor Arnold von Siegen . It is a formal grammar that is poor in explanations as the basis for the oral lessons, for which Vivre wrote the text materials (dialogues, letters, etc.) herself.

He called the associated dictionary, which he also published, Synonyma . It was a bilingual phraseology arranged according to expressive intentions , which offered several idiomatic solutions for the verbalization of a basic idea . In the article “Accompaigner / Gesellschetzt thun” the user found ten phrases, including “Nous vous acheminerons. We will bring you to the wech ”and“ Ils nous mettront en chemin. They will open us to the change ”.

After all, Vivre composed comedies that were intended to be performed by the students and can therefore be used as teaching and learning material.
