Tram in Osijek

history

Osijek can look back on a long history of public transport. The first horse-drawn tram ran in September 1884 and was taken over by the city in 1919. In 1926 the electrification and the double-track expansion of the line followed.

In later years a bus service was also introduced.

Line network

Route map of the Osijek tram

The tram network currently comprises two lines that are operated almost independently of each other:

  • Line 1: Višnjevac - Trg Ante Starčevića - Zeleno Polje
  • Line 2: Trg Ante Starčevića - Mačkamama - Bikara

On May 14th, 2009 the first test run with the passengers took place on the new section Mačkamama - Bikara . The test drive was marked as line 5 , with the terminus "Bikara". After some struggle, the name was changed back then.

Line names 3 and 4 were historical temporary line names that:

  • Zeleno Polje - Mačkamama
  • Višnjevac-Mačkamama

served, but have now become superfluous.

Tourist tram

It is possible to book a ride in an old tram. The old two-axle vehicle with road number 8, which has been restored for tourist purposes, is available for this purpose. There are plans to bring back another TMK 101 tram , which was previously in service in Osijek, from Zagreb to Osijek. These trains are currently being decommissioned in Zagreb. If the plans are successful, Osijek will have a second tourist tram.

Tram network expansion

In 2009, the existing line 2 was expanded. This expansion has extended the route network by around 5 km. Six new stops have been added. The extension is designed as a single-track line that is traveled in both directions. Four stops have been expanded to double-track and form crossings for oncoming vehicles , two stops are in the single-track area. The single-track sections are secured for tram signals. The new route leads to the “Bikara” stadium and “Velebitska” street. There is an industrial area on one side and a high-rise estate on the other.

The single-track route is a specialty in the existing Osijek tram network, but was chosen for cost reasons.

The next step is to further expand and merge with line 1 to “Zeleno Polje”. In this phase, the aim is to build a tram overpass so that the existing track of the local railway can be crossed at level. The date for this stage has not yet been set.

On May 14, 2009 the contract was signed to expand the tram network again, from “Visnjevac” to “Josipovac”. The length of this extension will be 4.4 km.

There are also plans for three further potential expansions to be made by 2012. By this year, bus operations are also to be banned from the city center.

Electronic ticket

On September 1st, 2008 GPP introduced the electronic ticket called "Butra" . There is an IC card that can be purchased in the vehicle or at GPP sales outlets. A "normal" card bought in the vehicle or at the point of sale has a credit. This credit can, when it is used up, be paid back at GPP sales outlets or directly in the vehicle with the driver. The "Butra" must be leaned against the corresponding machine when entering / leaving the vehicle. Entrance is only possible via the front door. The exit is through the middle or rear door.

When entering the vehicle in the beginning (2008), the entire credit from the current stop to the last possible station (or next turning loop) was withdrawn. This was done as payment based on the number of kilometers driven. When you got out of the vehicle you got back the credit that would have been valid for the rest of the route. If the cancellation is not made, there will be no refund and the entire possible route will be deducted.

Since 2009 the tariff regulations have changed and the kilometer payment has been abolished. Butra is now valid for 45 minutes for one route zone , in any direction, even with the change and when the journey is interrupted. After this time, the new loan amount will be automatically collected for the following 45 minutes. When changing, it is imperative to log off in accordance with the regulations, or the 45-minute driving time expires when you step out of the vehicle. Transfer journeys are displayed as "prijelazna vožnja" on the machine. And the remaining credit on the ticket. The next stop is also displayed. As soon as you see the stop you want to get off from in the display, you can log off.

The machine has three status lights:

  • green - everything is fine, the credit is corrected
  • yellow - communication in progress. It has to be waited ...
  • red - an error has occurred.

The price or the remaining credit is displayed in Croatian on the screen.

There is also a monthly pass, but it is only valid for residents of Osijek.

Should problems arise during use, this can be clarified at the main sales point (at the "Remiza" tram depot).

It is also possible to return the "Butra" to the driver at the point of sale and in the vehicle. Then any unused loan will be repaid in Croatian currency "Kuna". The prerequisite, however, is that the logout has been made in accordance with the regulations.

The inspectors have a control reader. If you are asked by such a person to show the "Butra", this is imperative.

Since 2009, after numerous complaints, it has again been possible to purchase a one-way ticket from the drivers in addition to "Butra", which can be paid for directly in cash. However, this variant is more expensive according to the tariff regulations. This is also valid for 45 minutes and must be shown to the driver when entering the vehicle (also when changing trains). This ticket must also be shown to the inspectors if requested to do so.
