Founded in 1982 as Groupe Speciale Mobile (GSM) by the Confederation of European Posts and Telecommunications (CEPT) in order to create a "pan-European mobile radio technology". The GSM Association (GSMA) was founded in 1987 as the global industry association of GSM - mobile operator founded and represents more than 800 mobile operators today. In addition, more than 200 manufacturers of network infrastructure and mobile phones are members.

The association plays a central role in representing the interests of mobile network operators and in developing cross-network standards such as roaming into the networks of another mobile network operator or the use of SIM cards . In addition, the GSMA sees itself as a platform that promotes the further development of mobile communications. For example, it operates the Instant Messenger Rich Communication Services (RCS), which is supposed to work worldwide and to become a competitor for the widespread iMessage , WhatsApp and similar services.

The association was headed by Anne Bouverot until 2015, then by Mats Granryd (Director General) and Sunil Bharti Mittal (Chairman) and has its main office in London , but from a legal point of view it is a not-for-profit association in Switzerland with its headquarters in Zurich .

Membership is exclusive to telecommunications operators and is between $ 13,000 and $ 124,000 annually, depending on sales.
