The Gailtal costume is the folk costume as it is worn in the lower Gailtal in Austria .

Women's festival costume

The Untergailtaler women's festival costume differs greatly from the otherwise long and dark Carinthian festival costumes. It consists of a multitude of parts, its characteristics are: the head and chest cloth, two silk or wool cloths with fringes. The white pointed stockings that highlight the girls' calves, the lace-up boots made of black leather with white embroidery . Over the white, lace- trimmed cotton underpants comes a short, narrow petticoat laid in waves, under the edge of which one can see red garters. A wide skirt with 12 linear meters of fabric is worn over it, which makes the heavy pleated skirt of the body coat protrude with a flourish. The linen blouse is carefully starched, has a V-shaped pleated collar and fluffy sleeves. The contrast is a dark body coat, which consists of a hand-pleated skirt made of pure wool fresco and a velvet or silk bodice. This includes two aprons, a small, black, smooth one and a larger, patterned one made of wool muslin and hand-pleated. The showpiece is the wide, quill-embroidered leather belt with ribbon decoration and knife straps.

Male costume

The men's costume is of the lower Gailtal by the Kufenstechen a living old-shape, which contrasts with the colored Festtracht of women. The traditional costume, which is kept dark, indicates the former occupation of the rural carters. A white linen shirt with its characteristic puffy sleeves and the red witch stitch on the collar and cuffs serves as the basis . A high-necked gilet made of silk or embroidered velvet is worn over it and is closed with a dense row of silver buttons. A colored silk scarf is tied over the gilet. The dark velvet skirt , which can be worn in brown or black, has a Harras ribbon edging, the color of which can be freely selected (black, blue, green, brown). The black or brown knee breeches are made of leather or loden and can be tied with a cord on the leg. The high shaft boots that reach above the knee are only worn in brown by the runners, although black boots are also common. In addition to the large black slouch hat with its black twisted cord and the large head, the young riders also wear a black pointed hat with colorful stripes, which otherwise hangs out of the boot.
