Gaius Cartilius Poplicola was a member of an influential family in the 1st century BC. In Ostia .

The origin of his family is not entirely certain, but the name Cartilius is rare and perhaps of Etruscan origin. In fact, the name is also documented in the Etruscan city of Chiusi . His family may come from there. In any case, his father's name has been passed down as Gaius.

Gaius Cartilius Poplicola is best known from a long inscription on his grave monument near Ostia. After that he managed eight times to hold the office of Duovir (roughly translating as mayor ), three times he was censor .

The tomb and the repeated election to Duovir prove his influence. The grave, which was donated by the citizens of the city, is a solid stone structure. On the facade there is the above-mentioned inscription and above it a marble relief. Gaius Cartilius Poplicola also dedicated a statue in the city's Temple of Hercules .
