Galia is a commercial type of sugar melon ( Cucumis melo ) and belongs to the group of net melons . Several varieties are called Galia, not just the original variety Galia .

According to the trade type definition, the fruits of the Galia have the following characteristics:

The fruit has a rounded shape with a height to diameter ratio of usually 0.9 to 1.2. She has an average weight of 0.5 to two kilograms. Ripe fruits have a yellow surface with green spots. At the end of the flower, the nerve traces can sometimes be darker in color. Some varieties may not turn yellow. The fruits are always net, but the background color shines through. The surface is neither wrinkled nor ribbed, and there are no seams. The stem loosens when ripe and the fruit may be missing. The flesh is greenish to white and becomes lighter towards the seed cavity.

The flavor expression is considered to be moderate to good. Some new varieties are characterized by an orange pulp. As with all net melons, the ripeness of consumption is indicated by a strong scent, with Galia additionally by the fact that in most varieties the stem is completely detached from the fruit. They also become a little softer, so that you can easily squeeze them with your hand.

The Galia melon is used as a dessert melon. The Galia melons offered in Central Europe come mainly from Spain, Italy, Israel and South Africa and are available all year round.
