Ganter (camp tree)

Four wooden barrels on a wooden ganter

A block with a square cross-section made of wood or sandstone, which serves as a support for wooden barrels in the brewery's storage cellar or in the wine cellar, is called a ganter (also known as a storage tree ).

The upper edge of the gander should be about 90 cm from the floor so that the wooden barrel has sufficient distance from the often damp basement floor and air can circulate around the barrel. It also makes basement work easier if the barrel is stored a little higher. The barrels are secured against rolling away with wedges on both sides. In exceptional cases, ganters are also bricked and have curves that correspond to those of the barrels, so that they do not roll away. Wooden gander are usually made of strong oak.
