Money substitute

Money substitute or money substitute symbol was a money designation and was found on many German and Austrian city and regional authorities notgeldscheine and coins from around 1916 to 1923. This money was mostly printed locally and was valid within a limited area and a certain period of time and was from tolerated the Reich finance authorities . It was supposed to enable small payments in the retail trade , since the state coins were not available in sufficient quantities, because they were either privately hoarded or were confiscated by the state as a source of raw materials (copper, nickel) for war purposes and the cheaper iron, zinc or aluminum coins were insufficient were available.
