A money cutter was originally a money changer who improperly enriched himself by trimming the edges of gold or silver coins.

In ancient and medieval times , coins made of precious metal were in circulation as currency in many countries around the world .

Modern times

Nowadays the term is used more for people who are too profit-conscious (usurers), as money-cutting and as a synonym for usury .
