General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions

The General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT, General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions ) is currently the largest trade union federation in Nepal .

The GEFONT was formed in 1989 from the merger of the Nepal Independent Workers Union , the Independent Transport Workers Association of Nepal , the Nepal Independent Hotel Workers Union and the Trekking Workers Association of Nepal and is close to the Communist Party of Nepal - United Marxist-Leninists .

The umbrella organization, which currently has around 304,000 members, is affiliated with 17 individual unions and the Central Women Workers' Department as a special structure for women, the two largest individual unions in terms of numbers are those of agricultural workers and construction trades.

Alongside the Nepal Trade Union Congress and the Democratic Confederation of Nepalese Trade Unions, GEFONT is one of three Nepalese members of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC). In the membership list of the IGB, membership is given as 387,480 (as of November 2017).
