The Geobiotechnologie deals with the extraction and storage of inorganic and organic materials such as metals and energy resources and the avoidance of harmful processes and environmental protection with the help of microbial processes.

Microbial processes play a role in the formation of deposits ; they can mobilize raw materials and thus make them accessible and contribute to the rehabilitation of heaps and mining water. Biotechnology can make valuable contributions particularly in the development of smaller raw material deposits, deposits with low levels of valuable substances and in the recovery of valuable substances . The interaction of microbial and mineralogical or geological geochemical processes and their technical application is summarized under the keyword "geobiotechnology".
