Geocast is a communication mechanism that refers to the delivery of a message in a network to a spatially delimited area. Geocast is a special form of multicast that distinguishes between two types of addressing: symbolic and geometric. Furthermore, the new Internet Protocol ( IPv6 ) contains extensions that support Geocast.

Geometric addressing

With this type of addressing , an area is described by means of absolute coordinates, for example specified in the WGS84 format (these are used, for example, by the Global Positioning System ), to which the messages are then sent.

Symbolic addressing

A spatial area is defined by means of an alias, e.g. B. Room 2.0.14, addressed. The individual GeoCast routers must then know the geometric address of this alias.

The advantage of symbolic addressing over geometric addressing is that it is easier for people to use.
