Geological Survey of Natal and Zululand

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Geological Survey of Natal and Zululand was a public institution for researching the geological conditions in the British colony of Natal in southern Africa. It existed from 1901 to 1908 and had only a very limited work base. Their office consisted of two small rooms in Pietermaritzburg , where the government of Natal was also located. The full-time staff was limited to only one employee ( Government geologist ), the geologist William Anderson (1875-1942).

activity

William Anderson's field work focused mainly on survey shots in some of the eastern coastal stretches of the colony and in individual inland areas. In doing so, he examined areas on the north-western boundary of the area where it was possible for him to follow up on the work of the geologist Gustaaf Adolf Frederik Molengraaff in the Vryheid district .

The Geological Survey of Natal and Zululand has a periodical series in which Anderson and other authors reported on their work results. The Natal Colony in the Surveyor-General's Department was the editor . The three editions of the report contain geological maps. In the first report from 1902 there are the Geological map of the Lower Tugela Division and the Geological sketch map of Eastern Zululand , in the second report the Geological map of Melmoth District, Zululand and the Geological sketch map of Zululand (scale 1: 316.800) and in third report the Geological sketch map of the eastern half of Alfred County .
