George McClennon

George McClennon († 1937 in Chicago ) was an American clarinetist , singer , entertainer and dancer .

Life

George McClennon, adopted child of the entertainer Bert Williams (1874-1922), appeared from 1910 in African American theaters, shows such as Shuffle Along and in vaudeville . His humorous gas pipe clarinet playing was interspersed with various noises and laughter, which he accompanied with acrobatic and eccentric dance movements. In 1923/24 McClennon's first recordings were made with Eddie Heywood as the Harlem Trio ("Clarinet Laughing Blues"). 1924-26 he recorded a number of titles such as "New Orleans Wiggle" and the Fats Waller song "Anybody Here Want to Try My Cabbage" for Okeh Records under George McClennon's Jazz Devils ; his accompanying musicians included u. a. Buddy Christian , Bob Fuller , Eddie Heywood, Charlie Irvis and Clarence Williams . McClennon died of tuberculosis in Chicago in 1937. In the field of jazz he was involved in thirteen recording sessions between 1923 and 1926.

The pianist Willie The Lion Smith mentions McClennon in his memoirs: " Our clarinetist, George McClennon, could spin like a top on his stomach, or on his backside, while playing his instrument ".
