George N. Dale

George Needham Dale (born February 19, 1834 in Fairfax , Vermont , † January 29, 1903 in Island Pond , Vermont) was an American politician and lawyer , who was Lieutenant Governor of Vermont from 1870 to 1872 . He was the father of Senator Porter H. Dale .

Life

George Needham Dale was born in Fairfax, Vermont. He grew up in Waitsfield , studied law with Paul Dillingham and became a lawyer. Dale settled in Essex County , first in Guildhall and later in Island Pond.

A member of the Vermont Republican Party , Dale was a prosecutor in Essex County from 1857 to 1860 and a member of the Vermont House of Representatives from 1860 to 1861 .

In 1861 Dale was appointed Assistant Tax Collector in Island Pond, a position he held until 1866.

From 1866 to 1869 Dale was a Senator in the Vermont Senate and President of the Senate from 1868 to 1869. Dale won the election to lieutenant governor in 1870 and held that office under the terms of the Mountain Rule.

From 1872 to 1882 he again held the post of Deputy Tax Collector of Island Pond. Dale became president of the Vermont Bar Association in 1885. He held this office until 1886.

Dale returned to the Vermont House of Representatives as an MP in 1892, and had a second term in the Vermont Senate from 1892 to 1894. He was appointed consul in Coaticook in 1901 and held this office until 1902.

Dale died in Island Pond on January 29, 1903, and his grave is in Island Pond's Lakeside Cemetery.
