Georg Ostrogorsky
George Ostrogorsky ( Russian Георгий Александрович Острогорский / Georgi Alexandrovich Ostrogorski ; born January 6 . Jul / 19th January 1902 greg. In St. Petersburg ; † 24. October 1976 in Belgrade ) was a Yugoslav Byzantinist Russian origin.
Life
His family emigrated to Finland during the Russian Revolution . He studied in France and Germany, did his doctorate in Heidelberg and acquired German citizenship . He had been a lecturer in Breslau from 1928 , but was dismissed from university service in 1933. He went to Prague and then took over the management of the Seminarium Kondakovianum , which had been moved to Belgrade . He received the chair for Byzantine Studies at the University of Belgrade and was the founder and head of the Institute for Byzantine Studies of the Serbian Academy of Sciences in 1948 , which under his direction became one of the leading research centers alongside Paris, Munich and Dumbarton Oaks . His main work is the book History of the Byzantine State , which has been translated into numerous languages and has long been considered a standard work, but is now out of date in many respects. Ostrogorsky, without a doubt one of the most important Byzantinists, was accepted into the Order Pour le Mérite for Sciences and Arts in 1966. In 1969 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . He was also a corresponding member of the Academies of Sciences in Athens, Göttingen , Vienna and London . He was friends with Percy Ernst Schramm .
Byzantine economic history was of particular interest.
