George W. Davis

George W. Davis (born April 17, 1914 in Kokomo , Indiana , † March 10, 1998 in Los Angeles ) was an American art director .

Life

Davis trained at the University of Southern California at Los Angeles and was employed as a set designer for 20th Century Fox in the mid-1940s . In 1947 he worked on Joseph L. Mankiewicz's fantasy film A Ghost on Free Feet for the first time as art director. In 1951 he received his first Oscar nomination for All About Eve . He was involved in several monumental films of the 1950s and received his first Oscar for The Robe in 1954 after a second Oscar nomination for David and Bathsheba . After his second Oscar award for The Diary of Anne Frank , he moved to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer , when Cedric Gibbons' position became vacant there due to the retirement of Cedric Gibbons .

At MGM, he no longer worked exclusively on feature films, but also on television series . Among other things, he oversaw the series Twilight Zone , Dr. Kildare and Solo for ONCEL While there, Davis received a further eleven Oscar nominations, but did not receive a third Oscar. His most important work for MGM includes Mutiny on the Bounty , Cincinnati Kid , Point Blank and In the Fisherman's Shoes .
