George W. Shell

George Washington Shell (born November 13, 1831 in Laurens , Laurens County , South Carolina , †  December 15, 1899 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1895 he represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Shell attended public schools in his home country including Laurens Academy . Then he started working in agriculture. During the Civil War he was a soldier in the Confederate States Army . By the end of the war he had attained the rank of captain. After the war he continued his activities in agriculture. Politically, Shell was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1886 and 1887 he served on his party's state board in South Carolina. In 1888 he was elected president of his state's farmers' association. From 1888 he was an administrative clerk at the District Court in Laurens County.

In the congressional elections of 1890 Shell was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of South Carolina , where he succeeded William H. Perry on March 4, 1891 . After a re-election in 1892, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1895 . From 1893 to 1895 he was chairman of the Committee on Ventilation and Acoustics . In 1894 Shell decided not to run again. He withdrew into his retirement, which he spent on his plantation at Laurens. He died there on December 15, 1899.
