Gerhard Petschel-Held
Gerhard Petschel-Held (* 1964 in Nuremberg ; † September 9, 2005 ) was a German climate researcher .
Gerhard Petschel-Held studied in Würzburg and Albany (New York). He received his doctorate in 1992 in Frankfurt am Main with a thesis on the border area between classical chaos theory and quantum mechanics.
From 1993 Petschel-Held worked at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) , where he was in charge of the project “QUESTIONS: Syndrome Dynamics of Global Change”. The aim was to use an interdisciplinary approach to investigate the human-environment changes in front of an earth system in a critical situation. In October 2002, Petschel-Held was appointed deputy head of the “Integrated System Analysis” department at PIK John Schellnhubers .
The main focus of Petschel-Held's scientific work was syndrome research , i.e. the connection between changes in social and ecosystems and research into mutual conditions. Together with Klaus Eisenack , he developed the “ Keep cool ” simulation game . The aim of the game is to make scientific findings accessible to a broad audience and to make the mechanisms of climate negotiations clear.
