A code of law ( GB for short ) denotes a codification of all applicable law ; however, it is mostly a summary of a larger sub-area (for example the civil code ). There are civil codes, family codes , labor codes, procedural codes, etc. Codes of law have existed since the creation of the Old Testament . Under Napoléon Bonaparte , the Civil Code and the Pénal Code emerged as legal codes in France at the beginning of the 19th century .
