Slip joint

Sliding joints , also called sliding surfaces or sliding planes, are a geological term . There are layers below the earth's surface (at a depth of about 0.5–200 m) with less frictional resistance than in the surrounding layers. If the frictional resistance becomes smaller than the gravitational forces of the rock and earth masses above, then slip joints can trigger the sliding of slopes or ground breaks. This can be promoted by the penetration of water into the slip joint during periods of heavy rain and when there is groundwater.
