Gobby is a text editor that supports the idea of collaborative writing . This makes it possible for several people to work on the same document at the same time (virtual presence). Gobby is free software and is offered under the GNU General Public License . All Unix derivatives , Linux operating systems, Windows and macOS (with an installed X server ) are supported. Basically, Gobby needs the GIMP toolkit in order to work.

Gobby supports Unicode and, depending on its type, highlights a text by means of a syntax highlighting .

In the current version, Gobby is based on the client-server architecture principle . This makes it possible to process several documents within one session . In addition, individual documents can be synchronized with the individual participants. To achieve a certain level of security, the individual sessions can be protected by a password. In addition to the client-server mode, there is also support for multicast DNS in order to find other participants in a local network and allows a session to be participated in a pseudo- peer-to-peer manner. This has the advantage that you do not have to know the address ( domain or IP address ) of the server in order to be able to join a session.

The communication between the individual session participants is in the style of an IRC - chats instead. In order to be able to distinguish the changes made by the individual participants, they can choose a special color, which is then used to highlight the text changes made by the respective participant.

The program allows encrypted connections via GnuTLS . There is also a free server version (called Sobby) available.

For a long time (in the 0.4 series before 0.4.9x in 2008), the editor was criticized for the lack of an " undo " function. Text deleted by mistake was permanently deleted.
