History of the house

Up until 1903 there was a house from the 15th century (with the name "U tří divých mužů" - To the three wild men) and part of a bathing establishment - Nové Lázně č.p. 228. Both buildings were demolished in 1903 during the renovation.

The current building on Masaryk embankment was built in 1905 in Art Nouveau style according to the plans of the architect Jiří Stibral. The sculptures on the front facade were based on designs by Ladislav Šaloun. The building was built for the First Bohemian Reinsurance Bank (První česká zajišťovací banka), which had its headquarters here. The bank was nationalized in 1945 and dissolved in 1958.

1945–1948 the building was shared by the Bulgarian embassy. From 1949 to 1990 the embassy of the German Democratic Republic was housed here. It has been the seat of the Prague Goethe Institute since 1991. The building is owned by the Czech state.
