Graham Newell Fitch (born December 5, 1809 in Le Roy , Genesee County , New York , † November 29, 1892 in Logansport , Indiana ) was an American politician who represented the state of Indiana in both chambers of Congress .

Life

After attending Middlebury Academy and Geneva College , Fitch studied medicine and completed his training at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University . In 1834 Fitch found employment as a doctor in Logansport, Indiana. In 1836 and again by re-election in 1839, Fitch moved into the Indiana House of Representatives ; until 1844 he gained his first political experience.

Fitch chose the profession of the teacher and held from 1844 to 1848 lectures on anatomy at Rush Medical College in Chicago ( Illinois ) and one year, to 1849, the Indianapolis Medical College in Indiana's capital city Indianapolis .

In 1848, Fitch successfully ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives as a Democrat . He was re-elected in 1850 and served from March 4, 1849 to March 3, 1853 as a congressman. A renewed nomination by his party in 1852 was unsuccessful. Four years later, in 1857, Fitch was elected to the United States Senate, which he subsequently served from February 4, 1857 to March 3, 1861.

During the Civil War , Finch set up the 46th Indiana Volunteer Regiment, which he commanded with the rank of Colonel . He fought in the Battle of Island Number Ten near Madrid ( Missouri ) and served in theaters of war in Tennessee . He experienced the end of the war in Saint Charles ( Arkansas ). In 1862 he was slightly wounded and resigned from the army.

Fitch retired to Logansport, where he continued to practice as a doctor. He died a few days before his 83rd birthday. His grandson Edwin Denby (1870–1929) followed his grandfather into politics and sat for Michigan in the House of Representatives from 1905 to 1911 . Denby was also US Secretary of the Navy from 1921 to 1924 .
