The Gran Enciclopèdia Catalana (often abbreviated as GEC ) is a general encyclopedia in the Catalan language. It is also the reference work for the cultural, social and economic situation in the Catalan countries .

Editions and issues

The work is from 1969–1980 in a first edition with 15 volumes and 6 supplement volumes (July 1969–1980, supplement volumes 1983–2005, ISBN 84-300-5511-8 for the entire work), a Catalan-language universal atlas (1983) and a supplement volume A – Z (1983) edited by Edicions 62 SA (volumes 1–3) and the publisher Enciclopèdia Catalana SA (remaining volumes and atlas). The first edition was overseen under the overall direction of Jordi Carbonell i Ballester (1965–1971) and Juan Carreras i Martì (1971–1980).

A second edition of the work in 24 volumes (June 1986 – December 1989, ISBN 84-85194-81-0 for the entire work), a universal atlas in the second (1987), third (1991) and fourth (1993) editions and a supplement -Band A – Z (1993) took place under the overall direction of Juan Carreras i Martì and the editorial direction of Jesús M. Giralt i Radigales. Up to 2002, many reprints with updates were published especially for this second edition.

From 1998-2008 a paid electronic version of the Enciclopèdia Catalana was offered under the name Hiperenciclopèdia . The Gran Diccionari de la Llengua Catalana ('The great dictionary of the Catalan language') has been integrated into this version . The enciclopedia.cat portal has been available on the Internet since March 2013 and provides the content of the “Gran Enciclopèdia Catalana” (2nd edition), the “Gran diccionari de la llengua catalana” and other works by Grupo Enciclopèdia Catalana free of charge .

Ratings and awards

The Gran Enciclopèdia Catalana became very popular and sold very well. The reason was the well researched and elaborated cultural, historical or geographical articles. In 1991 the work was awarded the Creu de Sant Jordi , the Cross of Saint George, the highest award of the Catalan government for exceptional achievements in the field of culture.
