Grapheme chain

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In linguistics , a grapheme chain is an arbitrarily defined sequence of one or more symbols ( graphemes , glyphs ). Most of the symbols are letters , punctuation marks and special characters of a language area.

Examples:

  • "The tree is in bloom." ( Grapheme chain as a sentence )
  • "Dys" ( grapheme chain as a prefix )
  • "Scheunentor" ( grapheme chain as a word )

The term grapheme chain has many similarities with the term computer science character chain .
