GrimE

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

GrimE ( Grim E ngine ) is an adventure game engine developed by LucasArts . It was first used in the game Grim Fandango .

GrimE is the successor to SCUMM . The engine uses the Lua scripting language instead of its own . As in SCUMM, characters and objects are defined in GrimE that interact with each other on pre-rendered or drawn background images. The main difference to SCUMM is that in GrimE the engine responsible for the representation of the figures and their movements is a real 3D engine; the characters are collections of 3D rendered polygons and the movements are controlled in full 3D by the keyboard. There are other, less obvious, differences; so is z. B. the way in which actions are designed, a completely different and allows much more sophisticated movements and actions of the computer-controlled characters.

After Grim Fandango , a slightly improved GrimE engine was used in Escape from Monkey Island , the fourth game in the Monkey Island series. In a hidden gag of the game Escape from Monkey Island , the developers point out the change of engine: in the middle of the game, the SCUMM bar is renamed the LUA bar .
