Kovel Great Synagogue

The Great Synagogue in Kovel in the Ukrainian Oblast of Volyn was built between 1886 and 1907.

history

In 1660 a synagogue was built in the city , which was destroyed by fire in 1744. Another fire in 1857 destroyed almost the entire city including the synagogue at the time. When the Great Synagogue was built, there were already other synagogues. Today there is a textile factory in the building. Up until 2009, the Star of David could clearly be seen above the entrance , which was then whitewashed.

Farewell words from Holocaust victims

In the late summer and autumn of 1942, the Jews were locked up in the Great Synagogue before they were murdered. Many wrote and carved farewell greetings and calls for retribution on the walls. The almost 100 texts were published after the war in the Memorial Book for the Jews of Kovel and thus saved for posterity. The inscriptions themselves were painted over some time after the war.
