Groundwater reservoir

The groundwater reservoir is understood as the totality of the available groundwater in the context of the water cycle . The water cycle is simplified, the interaction of evaporation and precipitation.

In the Federal Republic of Germany , the total amount of available water averages 290 billion m³ / year, of which approx. 64 billion m³ form the groundwater reservoir. About a billion m³ of this seeps into deeper layers. Around 8 billion m³ are taken from the groundwater reservoir to meet the water requirement, the far greater part from surface water.
