history

In 1999, the Guangzhou City Council proposed the establishment of an international base for biotechnological research, development and production on the Pearl River Island of Guanzhou in the heart of the city. The National Planning Commission confirmed this project in September 2001 under the name "Guangzhou International Biological Island".

In October 2006, the National Development and Reform Commission of China established the "National Bio-Industry Base Guangzhou", the core of which is Guangzhou Science City and Guangzhou Bio-Island, both in the development zone of Guangzhou, as part of the national program for Development of the biotechnology industry recognized. Finally, in December 2008, the project was identified as an important national innovation platform within the framework of the reform program for the Pearl River Delta region.

Location and infrastructure

The island is located 12 km from the city center in southeast Guangzhou and covers 1.82 km². It is 2.8 km long and 0.9 km wide. An underground line and a parallel car tunnel connect the island with the northern city area and the new exhibition center as well as with the university town to the south. The entire area is designed in the sense of an ecological park. The infrastructure facilities and buildings of the bio-industrial park are built using the most modern methods in an environmentally friendly and energy-efficient manner. For biotechnological research and development as well as production, a total of 28 building complexes will be built on a floor area of 722,700 m² with a usable area of 1,450,000 m². In addition, service facilities with a usable area of 300,000 m², restaurants and apartments as well as a 5-star hotel are being built.
