Kaufbeuren, Höfelmayr Chapel

The Höfelmayr chapel stands in the east of the city of Kaufbeuren on Augsburger Strasse on a high bank of the Wertach . From its elevated position one has a wide view over the city of Kaufbeuren in the west and the Alps or the Alpine foothills in the south.

history

The chapel was built by Johann Nepomuk Höfelmayr, born in Oberbeuren in 1815. Johann Höfelmayr was a wealthy landowner in the Kaufbeurer suburb, on the right the Wertach. After his first wife died in 1857, he wanted to build a chapel in a promising location above the Wertach Valley, in faithful memory of his wife. The city of Kaufbeuren provided him with a piece of land for this purpose, and the construction of the chapel had to be completed by autumn 1858. After completion of the work, the chapel then became the property of the Catholic Church Administration of St. Martin. After the Second World War, the property was exchanged for the city of Kaufbeuren and the chapel was renovated. Johann Nepomuk Höfelmayr married his second wife in 1866. In 1870 Johann Höfelmayr was murdered by his new brother-in-law in a forest between Kaufbeuren and Kleinkemnat. A stone memorial at the crime scene commemorates the crime.

Worth seeing

The Höfelmayr chapel was built in the neo-Gothic style and decorated with wall and ceiling paintings. Since 1981 the chapel has also been listed in the new list of historical monuments.
